In closed areas there are particles in the air pollutants harmful to people: particulate matter (dust, dirt, ash), biological contaminants (fungi, molds, viruses, dust mites), volatile organic compounds (formaldehyde), chemicals from the air ( nitrogen dioxide, CO, O3) and radon. The engineer Paul Sarfiel, BGH manager, explains that studies sponsored by organizations such as ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning) have shown that poor indoor air quality in buildings causes health problems. According to these data, exposure to contaminants can be 100 times higher inside than outside and determines that this problem is a major threat to people from contracting various diseases in the United States.
One of the first steps to reverse the situation is secure environments ventilation to dilute the concentration of pollutants. Also clean the filters of the air-to remove particles and removing biological contaminants. Finally, the constant monitoring of the situation of each particular space, then defining corrective actions.
“Indoor air quality depends a lot at the end of the outdoor air quality and it is getting worse globally due to increasing traffic, improving the standard of living and therefore a higher energy consumption,” explains Massimo Paci , specialist in the field. In this sense, Paci adds that Buenos Aires has a level of contamination due to PM10 (respirable suspended particles) of 48 micrograms per m3 of air, a level twice as high as the maximum average recommended by WHO.
This problem is usually controlled by specialists in central facilities buildings. And designers, glass fronts to raise the possibility of opening up some glass panels. However, Paci, air exchange is necessary also in a home: “In a well-insulated house, making an exchange of air by opening windows is wasted 30% to 50% of energy.”
At the recent Congress of Indoor Air Quality, Thesan firm introduced a device that fits over the openings for fresh air through a filter. This system allows the continuous removal of pollutants produced by human activity and the external air intake properly filtered. The premium filtration equipment is suitable for cold areas where energy costs are significant, because you can recover 85% efficiency.
Only ecological gas
Starting this year, all air conditioners must use the R410A refrigerant gas that replaces the R-22. It is an environmentally friendly alternative that will be mandatory for use in products manufactured in Argentina. The R410A is a high security, classified by ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) as A1/A1, ie, non-toxic, non-flammable, even in case of leaks.
This replacement is friendly to the environment because it does not affect the ozone layer. Unlike R22, which compound is chlorine (HCFC – hydro carbonaceous flúo chlorine) 410A refrigerant in its composition only contains HFC (hydro flúo carbonate) and is more efficient than R22: “A equal usage time, consumes less energy and achieves the same result to ambient level, with greater reliability and superior performance, “say the experts at BGH. And make it clear that the inclusion of R410A conversion is a major industry because it requires changes in the inputs of the equipment. Therefore, it is expected that initially the new air conditioners will cost more to today, ranging from 6 or 7% increase. But as they are manufactured on a larger scale will be balancing prices.
Currently, most residential and commercial equipment that are installed using R22. Their number is expected to decrease sharply from now on.
